In Virginia, a protective order is issued to protect victims of domestic violence, while a restraining order is issued to prevent contact between two parties. Both orders can be obtained through the court system and violation of either can result in legal consequences. In Virginia, a first violation of a protective order is considered a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500. The court may also extend the duration of the protective order or modify its terms.
