About CDS

CDS is an abbreviation of Combined Defence Services. This is an examination which is conducted twice a year by UPSC. This examination is conducted for the recruitment of candidate to four major academies, namely

• Indian Military Academy
• Officers Training Academy
• Indian Naval Academy
• Indian Air Force Academy

This examination is for those enthusiasts who have finished their graduation or are appearing for the finals. This examination is usually conducted in the month of April and September respectively.

Exam Details for CDS

1. This exam is conducted by UPSC twice a year and usually in the months of April and September.

2. A candidate must clear all the three rounds to get qualified for their desired position.

• Written – The written exam is held fundamentally on three motifs: Elementary Maths, General English and General Knowledge. The time allotted for the respective subject is 2 hours each. Where all the three papers that’s Elementary Maths, General English and General Knowledge are of 100 marks each.

• SSB – The CDS SSB Interview round also comprises many fundamental steps. On one hand Officer Intelligence Rating and on the other consists of Interviews, Psychology Tests, Group Testing Officer Tasks etc.

• Medical – The medical test is also done in two steps. The primary one being the general physical check up whereas the next is the detailed medical examination.

3. The exam usually comprises three main areas namely, Elementary Maths, General English and General Knowledge.

4. Each correct answer is allotted 1 mark whereas ? marks is deducted for every wrong answer.

Eligibility Criteria

1. A candidate must be an Indian Citizen.

2. The candidate must be a graduate or must be appearing in for the final examination.

• Indian Military Academy – Any graduate from a government recognised University.

• Indian Air Force Academy – Either an Engineering degree or any graduation in any stream but must have opted for PCM in 10+2.

• Indian Naval Academy – Engineering degree from a government-recognized university.

• Officers Training Academy – Any graduate from a government recognised University.

3. The Age Limit of the four respective fields are as follows :

• Indian Military Academy – 19 to 24 years
• Indian Air Force Academy – 20 to 24 years
• Indian Naval Academy – 19 to 22 years
• Officers Training Academy – 19 to 25 years.
