A month after its release, Diablo Immortal has among the lowest Metacritic user reviews of all time: 0.4 on iOS and 0.3 on PC. "Disgustingly constructed," reads one typical comment.
On the Apple App Store, however, Diablo Immortal has a rating of 4.5 out five stars. "Finally a mobile game well-executed!" comments one user.
In their manner both ratings are right.
Diablo Immortal isn't just the latest entry in Blizzard's long-running action role-playing game series, it frames Diablo in a different context. It has a number of new scenarios, in fact intended for mobile devices equipped with touchscreen controls. It's an online game with a hugely multiplayer component featuring a shared environment which lets you interact with other players in action. It's co-developed by a Chinese company, NetEase, and, like every Blizzard game prior to it, has been designed with an eye at Asian markets. It is free to play. These are all huge sea changes to Diablo.
However it is true that for any Diablo player, particularly those who are Diablo 3 player Diablo Immortal will feel comfortable and familiar. The trademark isometric perspective, chaotic combat featuring a myriad of monsters and loot fountains all present. In addition, Immortal has clearly been developed on its Diablo 3 engine and uses its assets, but retains the atmosphere and feel of the 2012 Blizzard game. Immortal's artwork is the same intensely colored golden glow.
