Alchemy

The food is excellent, but be prepared to pay a little more than the average neighborhood pub.

Another newbie worth the trip to the CBD is Etna - an old-world style pizzeria and wine bar with luxe decor that's reminiscent of a European castle. Sip on a range of unique drops and indulge in dishes like the signature risotto All'onda with roasted pork, mushroom, mascarpone and truffle béchamel.

Taking inspiration from urban laneway culture, the latest addition to Howard Smith Wharves is Los Felix. Think fresh Australian produce with Coastal Pacific, Yucatan and Sonoran influences in plates made to be shared. The tight menu of soft corn tortilla tacos, sides and tostadas is paired with mezcals and tequilas, Mexican beers and refreshing frozen margaritas.

Allonda

Allonda, the newest incarnation of the lauded Euro-leaning restaurant and wine bar in Brisbane’s leafy suburb of Newstead, seats 90 and serves up food backed by a discerning selection of vino. The team behind Nota has brought a refined sense of style to this split-level space, transforming a laneway corner with a sleek vision of stone, pale wood and polished concrete.

The kitchen focuses on seafood and upscale Italian fare, with dishes like oven-roasted flathead served with burnt orange ghee and fried capers and a punchy chicken roulade with Roquefort, truffle, mushroom, pistachio and sugarloaf all up for grabs. Other highlights include a four-course fresh pasta menu that runs the gamut from risotto all’onda to rigatoni a la boscaiola and casarecce with beef ragu, plus table-filling showstoppers such as Margra lamb rump with smoked yoghurt and grilled Western Australian scampi.

Yanika, who steered Nota to two Glasses at the recent Wine List of the Year awards, brings a similar discerning eye to Allonda’s 150-bottle list that spans old and new world drops. A short list of cocktails and spirits, including plenty of top-shelf tequila and mezcal, rounds out the drinks offering.
