increasing your overall productivity

Whether waiting for a meeting to start or having a lull in your workload, idle time at work doesn't have to be wasted.

Although sometimes necessary, employers often consider idle time unproductive and does not lead to tangible results. Employees who spend too much idle time during their shift risk creating tension between them and their employer, leading to decreased job satisfaction, revenue losses from reduced productivity, and possible termination.

On the other hand, there are ways employees can make positive use of idle time instead of simply sitting in front of their computer or taking a coffee break. Employees can use this break to read informative material related to their role, research useful tools that would increase efficiency in their workplace, or even brainstorm ideas on how they could help innovate existing processes within the company. Making conscious efforts to be productive during these brief pauses will make employers increasingly likely to recognize and appreciate the additional effort put forth by employees toward achieving workplace success.
