Tigers celebrate Club Championship three-peat

Sydney Cricket Club have secured a third consecutive Club Championship title, after finishing atop the 1st, 2nd and Brewer Shield ladders in the 2022/23 Women’s NSW Premier Cricket competition.

The Tigers were tenacious in their pursuit for the Club Championship hat-trick, winning minor premierships in all but one grade, and adding three grand final trophies to their collection.

Kira Churchland guided first-grade to the T20 title, whilst Darien Dubb-Lynch skippered the club’s second-grade squad to premiership success.

Leilani Veitch led Sydney’s U18 Brewer Shield side to the championship, rounding out another unrelenting campaign for the Drummoyne natives.

The Tiger’s terrific season is best portrayed through the final Club Championship ladder, which puts them 200.2 points ahead of second placed Parramatta. For context, the gap between second place and fifth place is 200.2 points.

Alan Campbell, Sydney Cricket Club’s General Manager, along with key Tiger’s women’s cricket representative, Gavin Zauch, detailed what the club’s ongoing success means to the players, coaches, and wider supporting community.

“Achieving the [Women’s] Club Championship for the third time in a row is a wonderful recognition and acknowledgement for all who are involved with the Sydney Cricket Club,” the pair stated.

“This success is the culmination of years of hard work. In particular our club has focused on inclusion of female cricketers through the district, and we are very proud to often have close to 100 female cricketers at training on Wednesday nights.”

Campbell and Zauch made certain to acknowledge key attributors to the Tiger’s era of dominance.

“We have a very committed and wonderful volunteer group who work tirelessly behind the scenes to set up the club week in and week out, a special shout out to Jen and Deb.”

“Our head coach Russel Grimson has developed a very strong coaching panel. Russel has a broad focus and an empowering style of coaching; he is absolute in wanting the best for his players and helping them achieve the best for themselves.”

“And our amazing club captain, Gizelle Plummer; she is an inspiration to our playing group. Gizelle leads our first-grade team, is a player representative on our Women’s committee and a Sydney Cricket Club board member.”

When asked how the club fosters a positive and successful culture that spans throughout every grade, Campbell and Zauch said;

“Our playing group are very committed; they enjoy the work and challenge Premier Cricket brings but they have also been around each other for many years so their social connections are incredibly strong.”

“Our culture begins with those young cricketers and as they grow their game and the more they are around senior players, they more they enjoy the culture – we have a very strong club first ethos.”

“My thanks to everyone at the club for a tremendous season; our coaches, supporters and sponsors - I know they have really enjoyed this year and it’s wonderful for our players to show their appreciation through success on the field.”

Cricket NSW would like to applaud Sydney on another dominant women’s premier cricket season and commend the club on achieving back-to-back-to-back Club Championship titles.
