However, it wasn’t until the 20th century that China revolutionized the industry through systematic freshwater pearl farming. In the 1960s, pioneering techniques developed in Zhejiang Province transformed the country into a pearl-producing powerhouse. Today, China accounts for over 95% of the world’s freshwater pearls, with the "Pearl City" of Zhuji in Zhejiang serving as its thriving epicenter.
