A Journey to the Top of the UAE

There are mountains goats in abundance and they're very accustomed to the sight of humans, as evidenced with their relaxed behavior.

Jabal Al Jais in Ras Al Khaimah, which is one of the seven emirates in the UAE, is 1,650 metres high and makes for an enjoyable day out with the family. The journey from Dubai is around one hour and a half and when you begin the climb dubai desert safari, it's about one hour to get to the top. You don't need a 4x4 for the climb as there were plenty sedans doing the climb with us. However, make sure to fill your tank. Out Ford Explorer took us up quite comfortably.

The sharp hairpin bends and the winding roads might cause you to feel a little disoriented if you're not used to these kinds of things However, there are plenty of places where you can stop for breaks, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and get some fantastic photography. There are mountains goats in abundance and they're very accustomed to the sight of humans, as evidenced with their relaxed behavior.

The road comes to an end just prior to the summit, and you can do the rest of the climb on foot. There is a route that is not beaten up the mountain-side, or the well treaded road if less adventurous. We did not go up the mountain this time, but do plan to do so in the winter months to take pleasure in the snow and cold winter air. It's been quite a while since we've put on our winter coats!

Jabal Jais is being developed to be a tourist destination. Roads are being constructed all up to the top and could take a long time to complete. There are toilet facilities on the top, as well as an unassuming tea shop where you can get hot tea and coffee cool drinks, biscuits and water. If it's the weekend, be prepared for a crowds and waits for your hot cup of culpa. Best to carry your own in a flask along with some food and an outdoor mat.

What better spot for a picnic? The drive is sure to make you hungry. The mountains are rough with no fleck of green, the views are quite breathtaking. In winter, it snows, hails and temperatures can dip to below zero. If you're in the UAE Visit both the winter and summer months. We went last week (mid-March), and temperatures dropped to just 15 degrees at the summit. It was around 20 degrees at the foot of the mountain.

Put on sturdy shoes and wear a jacket. The wind chill factor right up to April can cause it to be quite cold. You'll be enthralled by the journey and the photos you snap. Be sure to take that selfie or groupie with the stunning mountains to the back as evidence that you are on top of the UAE.
