The 30 40 Krag cartridge, also known as the.30 U.S. and.30 Army, was created in the early 1890s to give the American military a smokeless powder round that would work with contemporary small-bore repeating rifles and be chosen in the 1892 small arm trials.
The round was regarded as a small-bore round at the time since the cartridge it was replacing was the.45-70 Government. The Krag-Jrgensen, later adopted as the M1892 Springfield, was the final design chosen. The M1893 and later Gatling guns also made use of it.
